Nice and Slow

How to support young people struggling with addiction

Talking to someone who’s struggling with addiction isn’t easy. But with the right tools and approach, we can make a real difference. The “Nice and Slow” workshop is designed to teach how to communicate effectively, build trust, and offer meaningful support to young people dealing with drug or medication addiction.

This program focuses on empathy, understanding, and practical help – not judgment.

What does the workshop offer?

🔹 Understanding addiction – participants learn what addiction really is, including both physical and psychological aspects. Real-life examples help make the topic easier to relate to.

🔹 Learning how to talk – through role-playing and conversation simulations, participants practice active listening, asking open-ended questions, and showing empathy.

🔹 Recognizing what not to say – we explore common mistakes in conversations and how they affect people with addictions. Participants reflect on what builds connection – and what shuts it down.

🔹 Support planning – participants create personalized support plans for people with addiction. These include emotional, therapeutic, social, and medical help.

🔹 Resources and referrals – the workshop highlights how to connect someone with professional help, such as therapists, detox centres, support groups, and social services.

Why does this matter?

Because addiction is not just about substances – it’s about people. And people need to be seen, heard, and supported. The “Nice and Slow” workshop equips educators, youth workers, and volunteers with the skills and knowledge to talk with care and act with purpose.
